And you\u2019re not broken.<br>But this isn\u2019t just a bad habit. It\u2019s not just about dopamine. It\u2019s about <strong>what you\u2019re trying not to feel.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Distraction Is Often a Symptom, Not the Problem<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most people don\u2019t scroll for pleasure\u2014they scroll for <strong>relief<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Relief from boredom.<br>Relief from a quiet moment.<br>Relief from something that feels just slightly uncomfortable in the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But here\u2019s the thing: if you constantly need a screen in your hand, you\u2019re probably not avoiding boredom\u2014you\u2019re avoiding <strong>yourself<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-right\"><strong>What\u2019s Really Happening in the Brain and Body<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right wp-block-paragraph\">When you reach for your phone compulsively, it activates the brain\u2019s <strong>dopaminergic reward system<\/strong>\u2014a cycle that can become reinforcing. But it\u2019s not just neurochemistry. Research shows that compulsive phone use is often linked to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Emotional regulation difficulties<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Increased anxiety<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Low distress tolerance<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dissociation or freeze response<\/strong><br>(<a>Elhai et al., 2017<\/a>; <a>Hormes et al., 2014<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right wp-block-paragraph\">In other words: <strong>we use the phone to regulate what our system doesn\u2019t know how to hold.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right wp-block-paragraph\">That discomfort might be subtle: a small spike in anxiety, loneliness, guilt, tension in the chest, the sense that something is missing. Instead of staying with that feeling, we escape\u2014into the phone, the feed, the scroll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Avoidance Is a Nervous System Strategy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019ve lived in high-functioning survival mode for years, your nervous system has likely learned to <strong>numb or bypass<\/strong> emotional discomfort rather than meet it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Avoidance can look like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Grabbing your phone the second you&#8217;re alone<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Constant multitasking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cJust checking\u201d email for the tenth time<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Feeling panicked when the battery is low<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Never allowing stillness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But this isn&#8217;t laziness or lack of discipline. It&#8217;s often the body saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t know how to be with this feeling, so I need out.
